All Day Safe Sitters Class

Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge and the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge invite 11-13 year old youngsters to learn skills needed to baby-sit more safely.
The all-day Safe Sitters ® class on Tuesday, March 16 will be held at the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, 461 W. Outer Drive, Oak Ridge. Registration begins at 8:15 am, and all students must have a parent or guardian with them to sign the necessary paperwork.
Bring your lunch and join Cheryl Stallings, Family Education Coordinator from Methodist Medical for the class and a short graduation ceremony that begins at 4pm.
The $40 fee covers books, supplies and tuition. Financial help with the cost will be available on a limited basis. For more information, call the Children's Museum to register or Lorraine Bowen (865) 482-1074.


Pottery Classes

Instructor: Sherrie Carris
Potter Sherrie Carris received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas and Master of Fine Arts from University of Iowa. She established Carris Pottery and founded Art MuseumTouring.com with Tom Carris. Has forty years of experience in pottery, photography and printmaking.

Curious Clay
Saturdays 11-11:45am, Ages 3-5
February 13, 20, & 27,
Members $10, Non-members $15 per class
Youngsters will pinch and pull while exploring the squishy cool feel of clay. Then create a wall hanging and a mobile.

Saturday Afternoon Classes
February 13, 20 & 27
1-3pm, Ages 10 and up--Limit 6 students
Members: $15, Non-Members $20
Learn wheel-throwing essentials in this thorough and engaging class. Nothing beats a solid grounding in the fundamentals of wedging, centering, opening, pulling, shaping, altering, trimming, and glazing. If you've always wanted to throw pots on the wheel, this is the chance you've been waiting for!

Sunday Afternoon Classes
February 7, 14, 21, 28
1-3pm, Ages 5-12
Members: $15, Non-members $20
In this hand building class, learn basic pottery skills using tools for clay. Create your own coil vase or bowl, or a handmade mask.

Drawing Classes

Instructor: Lesley James
Artist Lesley James will be teaching drawing and painting. She received her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky and has been doing portrait paintings.

Introduction to Drawing
Ages 7-12
4 weeks, February 10 - March 3, Wednesdays from 4-5:15 pm
Members $40, Non-Members $50
Learn basic drawing techniques with drawing exercises. Learn how to hold a pencil while doing gray scale shading and line forms, pressure on the utensil and basic shapes. Draw a still life.

Introduction Acrylic Painting
Ages 7-12
4 weeks, February 11 - March 4, Thursdays from 4-5:15pm
Members $40, Non-Members $50
Learn the basics of acrylic painting. Learn to size and place your subject on canvas. Paint basic animal shapes blending acrylic paints. Paint one 8 x 10 small cartoon animal.

Introduction to Cartooning
Ages 7-12
4 weeks, March 10, 17, 24, 31, Wednesdays from 4-5:15pm
Members $40, Non-Members $50
Must have basic drawing skills. Using basic shapes and imagination learn character proportions and facial expressions with a pencil. This introductory course focuses on the basic shapes of cartooning. Lessons cover tips, techniques and lots of practice. Draw a single character.

Intermediate Cartooning

Ages 7-12
4 weeks, April 7, 14, 21, 28, Wednesdays from 4-5:15pm
Members $40, Non-Members $50
Must have introduction to cartooning. Learn how to draw cartoon people, background, creatures and objects. Learn muscle structure and anatomy. Lessons cover tips, techniques and through numerous practical exercises and lots of practice. Put a character in a setting with other objects.
Advanced Cartooning

Ages 7-12
4 weeks, May 5, 12, 19, 26, Wednesday from 4-5:15pm
Members $40, Non-Members $50
Advanced level must have introduction and intermediate cartooning.
Refine cartooning skills carried over from intermediate cartooning. Use watercolors to fill in the animation. Learn body movement, perspective, foreshortening, and laying out comics in storyboard form. Complete one cartooning frame.

Home schooling Art Classes

Kingdoms and Castles

Hear ye! Hear ye! Brave knights and Fair Ladies learn the royal code of chivalry, practice slaying dragons and dress the part as they are dubbed knights and dames.

Rain Forest,
April 7, 14
Taste foods that grow in the jungle, discover the creatures that live there, jump through the trees like a monkey and make a rain stick.

Creepy Crawlies,
May 5 & 12
Investigate bugs. Hop, crawl and fly like an insect. Make your own bug-eyed glasses, and buggy treats.
